I posted about dual anchoring but never mentioned proper anchoring procedures. Always use a 4 to 5 foot length of heavy chain attached to your anchor, then attach your anchor rode (the rope) to the chain. The chain is necessary to keep the anchor arm flat on the bottom so the flukes can dig in. Also be sure to have enough rode so that you can pay out 4 times as much length as the depth of the water you are anchoring in. You need that much rode to achieve the proper angle for the anchor to hold firmly in wind or current. If you have an anchor tied directly to the rode and only pay out 20 feet of rode in 18 feet of water the anchor will sit upright on the bottom and will only drag as the boat drifts. And ALWAYS anchor with the bow into the current or wind.
